ひみつの花園 禅/禪/גוים (The Way of the Monkey and My Secret Cache)
As serendipity would have it, I have found a great movie to illustrate tonight's talk about "The Way of the Monkey". Now, I don't intend to explain what Zen is, but rather the aspects that constitute Zen, and thereby "The Way of the Monkey". However, this is rather difficult, and I thought it would be better if I could point you to a movie, that, dare I say, is in the genre of "The Way of the Monkey".
You'll notice the points made are illustrated entertainingly in the movie.
Whilst, we do not have Zen in America, we have a pejorative term, that was adopted by many Jewish comedians called the "Self-Hating Jew". I have never read "Zen and the art of..." books. So, perhaps there too one may find examples of Zen in American culture. However, being a fan of Richard Lewis, Larry David, amongst others, all of the aforementioned acts all draw heavily upon the idea of "The Self-Hating Jew".
This is usually lambasted in America by more conservative Jewish groups as anti-Semitic. Most recently was Rosanne Barr posing as Adolf Hitler for the Jewish magazine "HEEB". The comedy was completely lost on many, not specifically those of the Jewish tribe.
It is not the point of this talk to deconstruct Judaism. But, to draw a comparison between something American and something of Asia. And, above all else, to inform you.
